Important Settlements

Record $486 million health care fraud settlement between the United States and National Medical Care, Inc. (January 2000). Ms. Durrell was the lead civil attorney for the United States in the government's five and one-half year joint civil qui tam and criminal health care fraud investigation of National Medical Care, Inc., the nation's largest provider of kidney dialysis services and products. The settlement included $101 million in criminal fines and $385 million in civil payments. In addition, the Company agreed to withdraw some $120 million in pending (unpaid) Medicare claims, and it entered into a sweeping corporate integrity agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. Ms. Durrell received numerous awards for this case, including the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service (the highest award given by the Department of Justice).

During her twelve year career with the Justice Department, Ms. Durrell settled numerous government fraud cases, including health care, defense contracting, and procurement fraud. She also supervised and managed all of the Boston U.S. Attorney's Office government fraud cases. During her tenure, the Office recovered over $1.1 billion in civil cases, with related criminal recoveries accounting for another $430 million plus. Almost 100 False Claims Act qui tam cases were handled during this time, making the Office one of the top districts in the United States for False Claims Act/qui tam cases and fraud recoveries.
